Vega Sicilia Único is an extraordinary red wine made by Bodega Vega Sicilia in the D.O. Ribera del Duero, winery located in Valbuena de Duero in the province of Valladolid. Vega Sicilia is the most emblematic Spanish winery. A historic winery, more than 150 years old, that has become a myth, an icon recognized worldwide thanks to the enormous quality of its wines.
Vega Sicilia Único is a legendary wine. One of those wines that any fan longs to taste at least once in their life. A limited production wine that is only made in the best vintages.
It is a blend made from the Tinto Fino variety, with a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes come from the oldest vineyards on the winery's property in Valbuena de Duero, a farm on the banks of the Duero River with clay-calcareous and alluvial soils.
The influence of a continental climate with Atlantic influence is low, with little precipitation concentrated in spring and autumn and hot summers with a lot of sunshine.
Vega Sicilia is characterized by taking maximum care of all the details in the production. The work begins in the vineyard. Green pruning is carried out to eliminate clusters and thus limit the production of each vine, obtaining grapes with a lot of concentration.
The harvest is carried out manually, selecting those clusters that are at their optimal point of maturation. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in oak tanks for 15 days at a maximum temperature of 32ºC. Once finished, it is devatted into oak vats where malolactic fermentation takes place. In these vats it rests for an entire year in order to clarify and rest the wine.
Vega Sicilia Único is aged for at least 7 years in French oak barrels made in the winery's own cooperage. It starts in a new barrel, and rotates to increasingly used barrels with the intention of achieving a perfect balance between wine and wood.
Once bottled, Vega Sicilia Único still rests in the bottle for 3 more years before going on the market.
A long process, which lasts almost 10 years, to give life to a very special wine, a unique wine.
